Grant Application Guidelines
TYPES OF GRANTS
The Bell Trust provides temporary funding only to congregations associated with Churches of Christ.  This is done in two ways:
  • Ongoing assistance is provided to congregations in the support of ministers or missionaries. This support is provided to a church on a temporary basis until that church either assumes the amount provided or replaces it otherwise. Greater consideration is given to requests when there is a planned schedule of reductions over a given period of time. Our commitments, however, are normally made for one calendar year at a time.
  • Assistance may also be provided to congregations through a one-time contribution for a specific need.

GRANT AMOUNTS
The Bell Trust considers the requesting church to be the primary supporter of a given work. Our general policy is to give congregations no more than they will provide toward a proposed work. Our desire is not to be a “matching grants” organization that automatically matches the amount the requesting church is providing. Rather, any assistance we provide is intended to be secondary and supplemental.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Grant proposals should be made by the elders, or the leading members of the congregation in the absence of elders, and include the following information:

  • A brief history of the church making the request (please include current Sunday morning average attendance, current average weekly contribution and, if applicable, a website address).
  • A description of the proposed work for which support is being requested (please include a discussion of background history and the factors that contribute to the need for the work).
  • Information with references on the minister or missionary involved in the work.
  • A proposed budget for the total cost of the proposed work, including income and expenses.
  • The specific dollar amount provided by the requesting church for the proposed work.
  • The specific dollar amount requested from the Bell Trust for the proposed work (if the request is for ongoing assistance, please include the month you desire for the support to begin).
  • Information on fundraising strategy, if additional funds are sought elsewhere (please include a list of all entities asked to give financial support to the proposed work, including their responses to date and dollar amount committed).
  • A proposed schedule of reductions (if ongoing assistance is requested).
  • A discussion as to why you are approaching the Bell Trust for the proposed work (please indicate any past history with the Trust or any contacts you have made with trustees or others leading to your decision to approach the Trust).
  • Add anything else you believe would help the Trust understand your situation and request.
Only one, unbound application is needed. Please address grant correspondence to:

APPLICATION DATES
The trustees of the Bell Trust meet to consider requests on the first Tuesday of March, June, September, and December of each year. Grant proposals must be received by the 15th of the month prior to our scheduled meetings. Applicants will be notified by mail of the decision on their proposal as soon after the meeting as possible.

NOT ALL PROJECTS CAN BE FUNDED
The trustees of the Bell Trust have responsibility for the final approval of each grant. Since the Trust receives funding requests far in excess of its ability to fund, only a portion of requests can be approved. A decision not to fund a proposal does not necessarily reflect on the merits of the applicant or the value of the proposal.
